Posted by DuluthJournal on March 31st, 2008

While George Clooney and Renee Zellweger may have come and gone a week ago, their “Leatherheads” movie counterparts, Dodge Connelly and Lexie Littleton, don’t arrive until this weekend.

When the movie opens this Friday, Duluth 10 Theatres will celebrate the event by featuring the story of the Duluth Eskimos, inspiration for the film’s “Duluth Bulldogs.”

PAVSA to provide new medical services to sexual assault victims

Posted by DuluthJournal on March 26th, 2008

Duluth Mayor Don Ness on April 2 will issue a proclamation declaring April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The proclamation will be held in conjunction with a press conference to announce a new community Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program. This essential service has been made possible by a unique collaboration between PAVSA, St. Mary’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital.

The SANE Program, coordinated through PAVSA, is a community-based medical and forensic response to victims of sexual assault. Sexual assault nurse examiners are registered nurses who understand the dynamics of sexual assault and are specially trained in collection of forensic evidence, medical/legal interviewing and documentation, and expert witness testimony.

This program ensures that victims of sexual assault receive the best possible care and resources when they report to either of the emergency departments in Duluth. The thorough and standardized means of collecting evidence by SANEs plays a crucial role in the investigation of these cases and increases the likelihood for prosecution of perpetrators.

In addition to the collaborative efforts of St. Mary’s, St. Luke’s and PAVSA, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Attorney’s Office, First Witness Child Abuse Resource Center and St. Louis County Social Services have been an integral part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for planning and implementing SANE.

This program is not only an exciting addition to the resources available to victims of sexual assault in our community, it is vital. While a victim-centered team response to sexual assault is imperative, community response to sexual violence need not be purely reactionary, we must be proactive as well.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an opportunity to shed light on a horrifying crime that often goes unnoticed and unreported for a myriad of reasons. Unfortunately, this violent act is a reality in our community. Various events throughout the month of April provide community members a chance to learn more about what they can do to end sexual violence.

Events for April will be announced at the proclamation.

Munson sisters to co-chair March for Babies campaign

Posted by DuluthJournal on March 26th, 2008

By Howie Hanson
Deann Munson and Luann Munson will serve as co-chairs for the Duluth March for Babies 2008 campaign, Walk To Save Babies.

Deann Munson currently serves as March of Dimes Northland Division board chairwoman. Her sister, Luann, was on the Walk committee a year ago.

Previously known as WalkAmerica, the March for Babies is April 26 and begins at the Park Point Beach House at 9 a.m.

“When you participate in March for Babies with the March of Dimes, you are helping to save babies born prematurely or with a birth defect who must fight just to survive” Deann Munson said in a prepared statement. “By walking, you could make a difference for them and their families because you are supporting lifesaving research and innovative programs to find ways to prevent prematurity or birth defects and help these babies win their fight.”

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march and rally April 10

Posted by DuluthJournal on March 26th, 2008

By Howie Hanson
The 1st annual Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march and rally will be held April 10 in Duluth. The event is a light-hearted approach to raising awareness of the serious issue of sexual violence against women, and is geared towards men who pledge to walk one mile in women’s shoes.

The men who march in high heels will get a sense of how “being a woman hurts sometimes,” said Ed Heisler, Community Education Coordinator for Safe Haven Shelter for Battered Women.

PAVSA logoBy choosing to wear heels or other women’s attire, men will get a sense of the vulnerability that women carry with them on a daily basis. Currently, 1 in 4 American women will be raped in her lifetime, often before the age of 18.

The rally begins at 6 p.m. at Fitger’s Brewery, with an opening speech by Duluth Mayor Don Ness, followed a march through Downtown Duluth starting at 6:30 p.m. Making closing speeches at the end of the march at Harbor City International:

. Duluth City Councilor Tony Cuneo

. Carl Crawford, Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Committee

. Rebecca St. George, Mending the Sacred Hoop

. John Doberstein, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes planning committee

At 8 p.m.: refreshments and viewing of “Killing us Softly,” by Jean Kilbourne, Harbor City International School.

Note: Men who march can choose to wear women’s shoes, clothing or simply wear a sash or carry a sign with sexual assault statistics. Women may also participate if they bring a male guest. Pledge sheet are available at the PAVSA office (32 W 1st St, Suite 200) or online at www.pavsa.org. Men who march are responsible for their own shoes and accessories, but signs and sashes will be available at the event. Anyone needing additional information prior to the event may call Sterling at the PAVSA office at 726.1442.

Newest Top 10 Lake Superior destinations

Posted by DuluthJournal on March 26th, 2008

Grand Marais, Minnesota, again earned its own spot on the Top 10 Lake Superior Destinations chosen by travelers and readers of the Lake Superior Travel Guide, now on the newsstands with its 21st Edition.

Once again the North Shore of Minnesota earned the top spot, as it has since the Top 10 list was started in 1993. But Grand Marais earned enough of its own votes to get the No. 4 spot this year.

The Top 10 is an informal tally of cards and e-mails sent in by Travel Guide readers the previous year and by information provided by those who joined the Lake Superior Circle Tour Club in 2007. (Anyone who has completed the Circle Tour can join free by logging onto www.lakesuperior.com.)

Here are the Top 10 Lake Superior Destinations:

1. Minnesota’s North Shore (in 2007, ranked 1st)

2. Keweenaw Peninsula/Wester Upper Peninsula, Michigan (in 2007, ranked 4th)

3. Duluth, Minnesota-Superior, Wisconsin (in 2007, ranked 2nd)

4. Grand Marais, Minnesota (not ranked in 2007)

5. Apostle Islands Country/Wisconsin’s Lake Superior shore (in 2007, ranked 3rd)

6. Ontario’s North Shore (in 2007, ranked 9th)

7. Thunder Bay/Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ontario (in 2007, ranked 8th)

8. Marquette/Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan (in 2007, ranked 6th)

9. Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan/Eastern Upper Peninsula, Michigan (in 2007, ranked 7th)

10. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Algoma Country, Ontario (not ranked in 2007)

The 2008 Lake Superior Travel Guide has added some new features this year to aid travelers. For the first time, there is a “quick view” itinerary to help plan trips to the lake for just a few days or a few weeks. The opening pages, called “Getting Started,” have been refreshed with new features such as a list of the best boatwatching and the best birding spots plus the return of old favorites such as the fall color map.

The guide’s mile-by-mile format lets travelers choose to do the entire circle or to focus on one area for a visit.

Lake Superior Travel Guide is a full-color publication printed annually in Duluth, Minnesota. It’s available at newsstands and at the publisher’s office at 325 Lake Avenue South, Suite 600, Duluth, Minnesota 55802; and it also comes with each subscription to Lake Superior Magazine. For more information, call 888-BIG LAKE (888.244.5253).

How Leatherheads landed in Duluth

Posted by DuluthJournal on March 26th, 2008

By Howie Hanson
Terry MattsonTerry Mattson (left), President-CEO of Visit Duluth, said visitduluth.com introduced Leatherheads studio executives to historic Duluth.

“While brainstorming for ideas on how to release the new Universal Pictures film, one of its vice presidents typed in an online query for the keyword ‘Duluth,’” Mattson said in an e-mail message. Duluth’s official tourism resource came up first in the organic search.

“He liked what we had to offer and gave our office a call,” Mattson said of the Universal Pictures’ vice president. “After some preliminary strategizing, we worked in concert with the Upper Minnesota Film Office and the Depot. Many kudos for the tireless efforts of Riki McManus, Ken Buehler and Gene Shaw. At the request of the client, we had to fly this under the radar until its release. The volumes of positive, nationwide publicity are overwhelming. This is as big as it gets.”
